What an offer does not say out loud

  1. 01

    What is guaranteed

Salary, signing bonus, stipend and housing over the whole term, per month and per hour at the hours the team expects. Prize money and streaming income are counted separately, as upside, because nobody can promise them.

  2. 02

What happens if it ends early

Notice days and severance turned into dollars, shown as a share of the salary you are counting on. Your share of any buyout, in dollars.

  3. 03

    What the clauses leave open

Fifteen plain checks, from a guardian's signature for under-18 players to who owns your name and image after you leave. Every No or Not sure becomes a question to ask the team.

Worked example

A 12-month roster offer, read line by line

$2,500 a month paid every 30 days for 50 hours a week, a $1,000 signing bonus, a $150 stipend, 15% of an expected $40,000 a year of team winnings with no payment deadline, half of the player's own $400 a month of streaming income, a $20,000 buyout with no share for the player, and no notice period or severance. Of the 15 clauses, three are answered No, three Not sure and nine Yes. The same code that checks your offer produced this.

Red flag 3

  • The team can end it with no notice and no severance.

Ask Can the contract give me at least 30 days' notice or a month's salary if the team ends it early?

  • Are you free to join any team once the contract ends?

An after-term non-compete can keep you off other rosters for months.

Ask Is there any limit on where I can play after the contract ends?

  • Are the reasons the team can end the contract listed, not "at any time for any reason"?

Listed reasons protect the guaranteed money you are counting on.

Ask For which reasons can the team end the contract early, and what am I paid if it does?

Weak spot 3

  • There is no deadline for paying your prize share, or it is over 90 days.

Ask Within how many days of an event is my prize share paid?

  • There is a buyout, but you receive none of it.

Ask Can I receive a share of any buyout paid for me?

  • Is any trial or tryout period paid, or is there no trial?

An unpaid trial can mean weeks of full-time play for nothing.

Ask How long is the trial, and is it paid at the contract rate?

Not sure yet 3

  • Does the team's use of your name, image and likeness stop when the contract ends?

Without an end date a team may keep using your name and image after you leave.

Ask Can use of my name and image be limited to the contract term?

  • Does the team need your written consent to transfer or loan you?

Without it you can be moved to a roster or a region you never chose.

Ask Can I be transferred or loaned to another team without my written consent?

  • Are the conduct rules written out, not "anything the team considers harmful"?

A vague conduct clause can be used to end a contract without pay.

Ask Which conduct rules apply to me, and what happens before any fine or penalty?

Clear 9 Show
  • Is every term in one written contract, not only in messages or a call?

  • Are you 18 or older, or will a parent or guardian read it with you?

  • Does it say how much you are paid and on which dates?

  • Is your share of prize money written as a percentage?

  • Can you keep streaming and making content on your own channel?

  • Does it list the equipment you get and who keeps it at the end?

  • Does the team pay travel, hotel, visa and event costs?

  • Does it say which law applies and how disagreements are settled?

  • Do you have time to have a lawyer or a trusted adult read it before you sign?

What Esports Agent is not

  • Not an agent or an agency. It does not represent you, speak to teams, negotiate or take a commission. The name is the job it helps you do yourself.
  • Not a law firm. Nothing here is legal advice. For a contract you are about to sign, a lawyer can give you advice for your situation.
  • Not a judge of teams. It names no team or league and keeps no ratings. It reads the offer you type in, nothing more.
  • No gambling, no betting. Prize money is counted only as your share of what a team might win.

Questions

Is my offer stored?

Not unless you save it. A check sends the numbers to the server to do the arithmetic and sends the result back. Saving puts the offer in your Offer Desk, which is opened only by its private link.

Who is it for?

Players who have an offer from an esports team or organisation, and the parents of players under 18. It works for any game. Amounts are in US dollars, and the legal notes describe US law.

Why does it ask about a guardian?

The rules for contracts with under-18 players are set by each US state, and they differ. A parent or guardian signing too does not always make such a contract binding: in California, for example, a sports contract with a minor is protected from being cancelled on the ground of age only once a court approves it. A parent or guardian should read the whole offer, and a lawyer licensed in the player's state can say what applies. Sources are on the About page.

What does the Agent Pass add?

A desk for 40 offers instead of 2, up to 4 offers side by side instead of 2, and a printable comparison sheet with each offer's questions. The check itself, and re-checking saved offers against the latest clause list, stay free.
